General (unsolicited) feedback from Saturday at the Queen Mary

Our troupe performed on the Valley of the Kings stage. We found the carpeting on it to be wrinkled/lumpy, kinda 'unsafe' although that's a stronger word than I really mean. The stage itself was SUPER low (was it even 12 inches?) although with that ceiling being rather low, it was probably necessary. The lighting for that stage was dim and kind depressing. Also a nicer backdrop might help the mood (yeah, I am being picky) I felt sorry for some of the vendors on that level due to the overall VERY dim lighting. Down on that level could use some AIR.
Also, as performers, we never saw or heard of anyone to order videos from. Perhaps better promotion of this would help with video sales.

We got quite a workout throughout the day going UP and down all those staircases! Could the escalators be turned on next time?

While the Luxor stage was FAR better lit and had a higher ceiling clearance ---- MANY of us from row 8 and further back lost site of Sherri and her trio when they did floor work. Could next year's stage in that area possibly be higher?
Maybe a food vendor next time as the choices for meals are FAR AWAY!!!

Overall, the staff was very friendly - our stage manager and announcer were both great!
We enjoyed being on the boat and being in Long Beach - great location. We'd love to return to this venue again.
( I did 'feel' for our friends who had to pay $18 to get in. )

Redlands downtown merchants have a Safe Trick or Treat THIS FRIDAY 3-5pm, and MECDA is invited to perform! Just don't know who can come on a Friday afternoon in 'holiday' traffic. The good news is its over by 5pm and you can still go on to your candy give-aways and halloween parties.

We''ll hook up at the Redlands Park Place bldg Clock, 104 State Street, Redlands. COVER YOURSELF WELL for times between performances, they're a bit provincial (and it's not very warm). There is a costume contest, across the street at Hales Park, so put your kids in costume.

Kids run from store to store for candy and prizes, spooky stories are told at Hales Park across the street.

Vendors for 2008

This was sent to vendors that we have contact info for, but thought it would be good info to post here. In the past, Cairo Carnivale was considered a mostly Orientale/Cabaret event, and this year I'd like to create more of a feeling of diveristy and community.

Dear Vendors,

As the new director of MECDA’s Annual Belly Dance Carnival (June 7-8, 2008), I’m pleased to write to you with news of exciting changes for this year. As with any new venue, its taken a couple of times to get the flow just right, but we’ve got an amazing layout this year that will maximize the space, create traffic for the vendors, and be easy to navigate for patrons.

Our most important change of the year is the new vendor layout. We’ve reduced the number of spaces both inside an out, to create a better arrangement for our valued vendors. Once inside the grounds, patrons will be able to stroll through the vendors on the main walk-way, past the large “winners circle” and up the ramp to the inside portion of the carnival, or over to the left, past the patches of grass and shade to more vendors and the new location of the outdoor stage. Once inside, patrons will wander past all of the vendors on their way to the stage, which will be at the far end of the room. We’ve eliminated vendor space close to the stage and have also created “mini-bazaar” spaces in the alcoves on the left side of the hall, making each turn a new discovery for eager customers.

We’re working hard to make this carnival the best ever. We're creating identical stages and lighting for indoor and outdoor performances, and assuring better food choices for our patrons.

If you’ve already registered for the Carnival as a vendor, thank you for your support! If you are considering vending but were not happy with last years’ layout, the number of vendors, or any other reason, we encourage you to reconsider. We’re working diligently to put in place new procedures to ensure a smooth carnival with a maximum benefit to our vendors.

I’m available to discuss any concerns about the carnival (bloodamsel@yahoo.com), and Rosemary Humbert is happy to assist you in any capacity as this years Vendor Coordinator. MECDA CARNIVAL-VOLUNTEER SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE!

We are coming closer and closer to June 7th and 8th when the MECDA Belly Dance Carnival will be held at Santa Anita Race, 285 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia, CA 91007! Carnival Hours are:
Saturday: 11:30 am to 8:00 pm & Sunday: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

With the date looming, we are still in need of Volunteers for particular jobs on both days.

Positions available are:
Wristband Checkers/Security for all shifts – Saturday & Sunday

Saturday:
General Admissions – 5:00-7:15 – Need 2 People
Workshop Admissions – 12:00-3:15 – Need 2 People
Information/Bag Check – 1:00-3:15, 3:00-5:15, 5:00-7:30 – Need 2 People for each shift
Music/Biography Runner – 5:00-7:00 – Need 1 Person

Sunday:
General Admissions – 3:30-5:45 – Need 1 Person
Workshop Admissions – 12:00-3:15 – Need 2 People
Music/Biography Runner – 11:30-1:45, 1:30-3:45 – Need 1 Person for each shift

Weathervane Images will be coming to MECDA Belly Dance Carnival June 7-8 to photograph performances on the indoor stage!

Last month, Tribal Caravan was a great success and we were able to capture some great images of all you dancers showing off your skills on stage. In addition to all the dancers who made reservations with us to guarantee their slot being photographed, we managed to capture the performances of more than half of all other troupes and made those photos available online. Hello everyone. I am Harriet, the Volunteer Coordinator for MECDA’s 2008 Belly Dance Carnival. This year’s Carnival will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 7 & 8, 2008, at Santa Anita Park Racetrack and we are currently seeking Volunteers.

Remember, on the day that you volunteer 2 hours of your time, ADMISSION IS FREE!!!!
Volunteer for 2 hours each day and ADMISSION IS FREE FOR THE ENTIRE WEEKEND!!!!

Cairo Canivale previous location question

three years ago and also 4 yrs ago when I went to CC it was in a very interesting bldg in Glendale with the second stage downstairs.
I have heard that in previous years there had been and even MORE interesting location that was changed due to 9/11 backlash against the M.E.
here's my question:
what was the reason for changing from the building in GLendale?
(dont' get me wrong, I liked 2007 at the race track)

Do we have any “old timers” out there that can tell us more about the start
of the event?

The oldest evidence we have is the 1985 Cymbal magazine, where Cairo
Carnivale has just happened. There is no reference to how many years the
event has been going at that point, just that it happened, as though it has
always been!

Some of the Helpers listed that we still recognize are: Trissia Baughman,
Lucy Campa, Carolyn Harper, Jenza, June Jones, Toni Perrine, Terry
Poochigian and Kari Sprowl.

Some of the Vendors listed: Doyne Allen, Jorjana, Carolyn Harper, Harry
Saroyan and Marta Schill. (There is a great photo of Marta in costume,
too.)

Some of the performers: Angelika & Co, Beledi Dancers, Caravan, Dahlena,
Jenza, Marguerite, Troupe Mosaic, Perfumes of Araby, Terry Poochigian, and
Veils and Incense.

“The success of the Carnivale is due to the HELPERS, VENDORS AND PERFORMERS

The Future of MECDA?

MECDA is Celebrating 30 years in November! The year there is no So. CA "MECDA Central" event, but several Chapters are having events, be sure to check the website and the Happenings for details!

So the Question is, WHAT do you think of MECDA as we move into the future?

Now that the year-round calendar is packed with Belly Dance events of all kinds from many different sources, does that make MECDA more important or less?

Do you find your Happenings important for finding out about events? OR are you looking for more info from the websites like BHUZ, here at Tribe, or LARaqs.com?

How do you like the latest incarnation of the Happenings?

MECDA is once again planning to offer it's own "in house" magazine to members, "The Cymbal". So stay tuned and once it comes out, let us know what you think of it.

In general, is the magazine portion of the membership important to you?
What do you want to see for the magazine?

Any other MECDA comments, compliments or complaints?

Videos for Cairo Carnivale

Hi, everyone!

This is Jeanie from Arnie's Productions.
We have the BIG task of covering BOTH the Gypsy Stage and the Indoor Bazaar Stage this year.
(We have been videoing at Cairo since uh, um 1997, was Arnie's first year, I think!)

The Bazaar Stage is in a DIFFERENT room this year, that is bigger, where the evening show will also be.

We have a lot of video orders that have come in from performers, and a lot of checks that I have yet to get to the bank, so please be patient.

If you have any ideas for us, I am happy to listen. Can't promise any action, but willing to listen.

Such as- the size of your TV screen. . . . old square TV size or the new, wide screen size?
We can only pick one because there is no way we would be able to switch the camera back and forth for individual performances.

Packaging- I think we will stick with the full size cover with a printed Cairo design,
but we do a lot of other events, does anyone care if you get a full sized cover? Or is the little disc "shell" OK?

Lighting- If it's is too weird, or too dark, there just isn't much we can do about that!
We have nice, professional cameras- if you don't believe me, just ask Arnie. He loves to point out the same model of Sony cam when it shows up in "Dirty Jobs" or the old TLC wedding reality show. "Hey, that's our camera!". For low lighting, it is one of the best,
BUT it still needs SOME reasonable lighting conditions to get a good picture!

So there you have it, I will come around on occasion until all Cairo videos are out.

Okay, we were only there on Sunday:
Those Flower Buds of the East (hope I got that right) where the happiest looking dancers we thought we'd ever seen! Ansuya and Ozzy wowed the crowd, L.A. Tribal were great,
Olu was gorgeous as always and Leelah and her wacky gang HAD to be the most entertaining - I mean:
Poodles, a full bar, cosmopolitans, a chandelier of martini shakers.
Crazy and hilarious - What a show!!!

2007 Raq'd !!!

Wow, thanks for a great time MECDA !
Three of us went yesterday, took a workshop, saw some great acts both inside and out, shopped like nobody's business, saw a ton of friends and, except for the food (still bad sorry- full disclosure here) had a fabulous time!
LOVE the park-like atmosphere outside and the breeze flowing in from the racetrack - Much better stage location this year. REALLY great EMCEEs!!!
It was such an improvement over last year and we had a really good time.

Cairo was a blast this year! Great dancing and great shopping. The stage was so luxurious, and I loved the little tents off to the side. I saw an awful lot of fancy shutters snapping away in the audience on Saturday. If anyone has any pics of me dancing please send them my way! Performers Music for Cairo Carnivale

Greetings Cairo Carnivale Performers,

This is your friendly Sound Techs for Cairo Carnivale and other major So. Cal. Middle Eastern Bellydance Events and Show. We at Moonlite Fantasy Productions have provided sound and lighting for CC Bazaar Stage for 25 years. Music is our business. We want you and every performer to have a great show without music worries. In order for this to happen, we need your assistance.

Here are a few helpful tips for having a successful performance at CC musically:

1. Present two forms of media with only the selections you will be performing to. No other music tracks should be on the media.
2. The two forms of media should be: One CD and one tape, not two CDs. If one CD is blank or not burned in a traditional manner then both will be that way.
3. Please do not present a purchased pre-recorded CD and ask for different tracks to be played. We cannot be responsible for music mistakes.
4. Make sure your media is marked clearly with the name that will appear in the program, the Stage you are performing on and time of your performance. We are very busy the day of CC and sometimes music media is sent to us unmarked. We do not have time to figure out what performer belong to what music.
5. Make sure you music is recorded/burned on good media and good equipment. What sounds good on a boombox will not sound as good on professional sound equipment.
6. Requests for mics and cordless mics must be taken care of before CC begins.

Have a great weekend at Cairo Carnivale and feel free to offer any requests and suggestions.

Cairo carnivale 2007!

Hi! we are almost ready for C.C! I still need volunteers for afternoon shifts on both sat & Sun.. if you want to volunteer for 2 hours, you get it free, please fill out the volunteer form on www.mecda.org

Vending is sold out! I was at the race track today planning the vendor set up, It looks great! the gypsy camp set up is basically the same as last year. The Drum circle, all day dancing, shopping, eating.. : )
We have a "new" addition.. there will be 2 entrances to the Bazaar! One entrance at both ends! we have 4 times the room as last year for the vendors to spread out, you to shop comfortably and 300 chairs surrounding the large stage.. (plenty of room between vendors and chairs!)
We have a great team this year, and we are trying our best to make sure you have a wonderful time!

A message from MECDA's Central Board

A letter was mailed to MECDA members from a "Concerned Committee." This is our response which will be sent to All Mecda Members who have given us their email addresses.

MECDA was formed as an organization to improve wages and conditions for Bellydancers. We have accomplished that - and we have moved on to become a needed communications organization to provide unity and service to all dance communities throughout the United States.

As to our finances: We have a direct connection between receipts and 1099's to all payments, which are made by check; we have no credit cards. There is no money missing from MECDA.

We did pay a penalty to the IRS for one year when Treasurers were changing offices, and our statement was late. This was years ago, and it was not a big issue: Once in 30 years is a great record.

We have about 20 individuals working in the Central Board and the Cairo Carnivale. For them to receive an average of $1,300 a year means about $100 a month. This may not even account for the gas money they spend to do their job.

Officer qualifications change according to what computer skills are available for them to do their jobs in the best and easiest manner.
If an individual on the Board does not perform competently, they are replaced.

We had a request to sub out our 'treasurer' position to an accountant. He would only enter our materials into "Quicken," no judgement of the appropriateness of the invoice, no response to members, no attendance at meetings. Data entry is only a small part of what the MECDA Treasurer does. He was not useful to us.

Obviously, all MECDA members are valued and treated equally. Each MECDA member pays a maximum of $50 to join - they receive $74.00 worth of publications (Chronicles, Happenings, Directory) in return, as well as discounts on events and products. We make up for the difference between this amount and your membership fee from revenue generated by the Cairo Carnivale.

The individuals who sent you that letter didn't even trust you to vote the way they want even after reading their distortions and lies.They expect you to send them your blank ballot with the required envelope to them - so they can vote instead of you!

The current MECDA Board has worked very hard to accomplish communications, events, and services for members across the country.

FYI:

MECDA'S CODE OF CONDUCT includes the following: "Personal information obtained in private will be respected as such. Members will not repeat gossip that could be detrimental to the welfare and happiness of others."

AND Furthermore:

Article IX of the MECDA Bylaws states: "Names, addresses, phone numbers and other pertinent information of and about MECDA members will be kept in confidence by the officers so entrusted for the sole reason of conducting MECDA affairs, and will not be released without permission of the specific member(s) involved."

It is unknown at this time who provided the confidential names and addresses of MECDA's membership, but this situation is currently under investigation. If the person(s) involved in releasing the confidential information are discovered, pertinent action will be taken.

Please contact all members in your chapters and all of your MECDA friends and encourage them to send in their OWN ballots!

! Please have some decent food vedors in 2007!

As someone else has posted, the food was horrid last year - unless you love nitrate filled hotdogs.

MANY Belly dancers are vegetarians, there are event TRIBES for them! Have you seen the number of tribe members on the Vegan and Vegetarian tribes? That's a clue. And I would think that since most of us dancers are concerned about our general health and well being, racetrack junk food isn't really what we crave after a day of workshops, shopping and performing!

If the venue doesn't allow you to have outside vendors for food because of competition, then could you at LEAST request that they have some HEALTHY alternatives to the junk they had last time. But seriously, you couldn't go wrong with some middle eastern or indian food vendors there.
We couldn't even find any juice anywhere, most dancers are aware (I hope) that carbonated beverages leach the calcium from your bones.
PLEASE find some alternative to what was offered last time - (pleading on knees).

Bad Girls of Belly Dance at Cairo Carnival 2007

Yes, it's true.
The Bad Girls of Belly Dance (can a drinking game be a 'circuit party'?) hits Southern California.

Those of you involved the more...<ahem>...festive aspects of celebrating dance...(read: party) might consider heading to Cairo Carnival a day early to join us at DisneyLand on Friday, June 8th.

It should be easier than our DisneyWorld run, since we won't have to monorail it to the Polynesian Resort for Zombies!

Since I'm the instigator of this, anyone signed up for at least one of my workshops at Cairo Carnival *and* joins us for the Bad Girls party gets a free Bad Girls of Belly Dance tshirt or tank. We'll have new styles just for the event.

This was my first time at Cairo Carnival... i was a vendor, Geisha Moth.

Now there are festivals... and then there are parties... This was indeed a Party!

I had the best time there! Got to see friends and make new ones too!
The flow of the indoor & outdoor was Great!
In & Out were vendors galore and total of two stages! Perfect location with ample parking! And the staff was friendly and helpful! (A+++ Mr. Vern, and the gal at the raffle table, didn't catch her name :o)

If you missed it this year, it is definitely worth the drive or flight! I drove 6 hours to get there.. And will do the same next year. I had a great time at my booth and got to do a little shopping and watching of dancers as well!

So to all of you that make 'this thing work'... Two Thumbs Up! ....and my Two Big Toes too!

Come Dance with us. Turkish Halay Line Dance @ Cairo Carnival

.....Hello All.....

I am putting together a small Turkish Halay class and Line Dance at Cairo Carnival on Saturday the 10th. (I am not the one teaching, it will be a real Turk who LOVES & lives for line dance. He is amazingly fun and lively)

Do not know where the class part will be held yet since I have not seen the new venue. If you are interested in attending inquire at the face painting booth or the entrance. I will leave
information on where and when it will be held. The class will be be sometime
between 12:00 and 1:30.

It will be ultra simple so everybody should be able to join in.

The actual Turkish Halay will be at the Gypsy stage at 1:55.

PLEASE come join and dance and have fun.

Santa Anita Racetrack????

I just got the MECDA newsletter and it said that Cairo Carnival for 2006 was going to be at the Santa Anita Racetrack! Is this true? Is it a nice venue? Whatever happened to Glendale?
Will it smell.....Horsey?
Isn't there a casino there as well?
I'm not saying this is bad, I just have a lot of questions!

Open Dance Venue at Cairo Carnival? ? ? ?

Greetings to the list,

Does anyone know if there will be a place large enough to host an "Open Dance" venue at Cairo Carnival. My band Al Samoud would like to play live music for those who wish to get up and shimmy with the best of'em. I have been going to Cairo Carnival for many years and have never seen an "Official" place for dancers to just go play and enjoy them selves. There have been small groups of drummers or a couple of musicians playing around, usually in a back ally or remote location but nothing remotely organized. Please let me know if you think this would be a good idea as I would be happy to pursue this further!

New music...

I will have new music at CC. A lot of world beat, fusion stuff. Cheb i Sabbah just came out with a North African influenced cd. Also some new didgeridoo fusion cds. Come by and take a listen. I'll be downstairs in my same spot. Simply Stylish is the name of the booth for those that don't know.
